1860 A. Wurtz in Chem. News 25 Aug. 121/1 Glycolic, lactic, and oxalic acids..are acids of very simple constitution; but such is not the case with those obtained by oxidising the complex glycols, which I have called polyethylenic alcohols. 1878 C. M. Tidy Handbk. Mod. Chem. xxiii. 574 By heating glycol with ethylenic oxide in sealed tubes, a series of compounds called polyethylenic glycols (or alcohols) are formed. 1895 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXVIII. i. 320 Ethylenic oxide and sodium ethoxide..give a product which boils at 110–120°..; this..must therefore be regarded as a complex ethylic polyethylenic oxide.
