What's that thing at the bottom of the fork steerer? You know that slanted metal thing on the bottom of the fork steerer that can slide around? Like, the diagonal cut thing at the end that you insert into the hole whe...
I think by _steerer_ you mean a _quill type stem_ !quill stems The diagonal cut part is a wedge. It's pulled up by a long bolt that runs down the stem and locks the stem in the fork steerer tube.

Is it safe to use a spacer that reaches above the steerer tube? I have a spacer that reaches from the top of the stem and over the top of the steerer tube. I am able to lock it down with the top cap, but I was wonderi...
You actually _need_ something sticking up above the top of your steer tube. It can be either a spacer or the stem itself. This is because the top cap squeezing down onto the stem/spacer stack is what keeps the headset bearings snugly in their cups. If the top cap is flush with the steer tube, there ...

Safe steerer spacers stack height I'm building my first road bike, which means I'll have to find appropriate bar height through personal experience and cut the fork steerer in process at least once. I plan to start wi...
I've managed to receive an actual answer from the manufacturer. Turns out all my emails were routed straight to spam folder. The fork in question was Hongfu FM166, other resellers probably have it under similar name. Maximum recommended spacers stack size, as quoted by customer support, is **30mm**.

Amount of spacers below the stem for steel 1 inch steel steerer I have a steel bike with 1 inch steerer tube made out of steel. I have about 55mm of spacers below the stem and above the top of headset. Is is safe to r...
Common threadless steel steerers have essentially no practical limit for this in either 1" or 1-1/8". There of course is a theoretical limit, but it's going to be a very large number, way over 12"/300mm. There have been a few companies over the years to make thinwall fancy alloy steel steerers (Alph...

Replacing broken road fork with same model but shorter steerer tube. What can I expect for handling issues? My road bike is an '05 Trek 1000 54 cm frame size. The Bontrager carbon fork (Satellite Plus) was destroyed i...
Steering will not really be directly affected at all, because you are not changing the steerer tube angle, fork length or rake, or the stem length. (BTW, standard steerer tube spacers are 5mm, so you may want to check that you can actually drop your stem 30mm.)

Trying to build a bike, confused about fork/headsets/compatability I have a fork with a 1" steerer tube, and a frame with a 1.5" head tube. The steerer tube is slightly short, and when inserted into the frame, is fl...
I would get a fork with a steerer that fits the frame. The expense and risk of modifying your existing fork won't be worth it. There were some mountain bike forks with replacement steerer tubes but they didn't allow for changes of size or type of steerer.
