a quasi-Lat. prefix, with the sense ‘outwards’, an alteration of L. extrā outside, after the analogy of L. intrō inwards, compared with intrā inside; cf. also L. contrō- (see controvert). It occurs only in words formed after the model of, and by way of antithesis to, similar compounds of intro-.
