A plant of the genus of tropical American amaryllidaceous plants so named, esp. cultivated for their flowers.
1791 Bot. Mag. IV. 125 Striped-Flower'd Alstrœmeria... We treat it, and successfully, as a stone plant. 1833 Penny Cycl. I. 447/2 Gaily-marked flowers called Alstromerias. 1882 Garden 30 Sept. 292/3 Alstrœmerias are real gems, and should be in every garden. 1961 Amateur Gardening 2 Dec. 4 Alstrœmerias..with their azalea-like colours and flower heads, are good middle-border plants. |
