[Early ME. stamin (= Anglo-Latin staminum) a. OF. estamin (not in Godef. before 16th c.), parallel with estamine (12th c.; hence mod.F. étamine), app. a derivative (with suffix -in, -ine) of estame:—L. stāmina pl., warp threads (see stamen). The other Rom. langs. have in the same sense a cognate word of differing formation: Pr., Pg. estamenha, Sp. estameña, Cat. estamenya:—L. stāminea fem. of stāmineus adj., f. stāmin- stamen. Med.L. had stāminea, -eum, stāmen, a rough woollen undergarment worn by monks.]
