isoprenaline

isoprenaline Pharm.
  (aɪsəʊˈprɛnəliːn)
  [f. the chemical name N-isopropylnoradrenaline.]
  A sympathomimetic amine, C6H3(OH)2CH(OH)CH2NHCH(CH3)2, that is a derivative of adrenaline and is used (usu. as the hydrochloride or sulphate, both whitish, bitter-tasting powders) either sublingually or in an aerosol for the relief of bronchial asthma and pulmonary emphysema.
  This is the name in the British Pharmacopœia: cf. isoproterenol.

VI. 295 The amines used were l-adrenaline..and dl-isopropyl-noradrenaline hydrochloride (isoprenaline). 1965 Lancet 19 June 1301/2, 75 patients with symptoms due to heart-block were treated with a long-acting formulation of isoprenaline. 1966 Dunlop & Alstead Textbk. Med. Treatm. (ed. 10) 716 Isoprenaline given by inhalation is effective within a few minutes and, although the relief is relatively short-lived, this form of treatment has a useful place in the treatment of episodic asthma. 1971 Brit. Med. Bull. XXVII. 27/1 Death might be caused by the excessive use of aerosol inhalers containing..isoprenaline.
