  Also -eal.
  [f. hypothalamus + -o + hypophysial a.]
Of, pertaining to, or connecting the hypothalamus and the hypophysis; applied spec. to a tract of nerve fibres that runs from the hypothalamus to the neurohypophysis.

1934 Arch. Neurol. & Psychiatry (Chicago) XXXII. 217 The entity of the fibers traversing the infundibulum and entering the posterior lobe of the hypophysis is called the hypothalamo-hypophyseal fasciculus (‘faisceau hypothalamo-hypophysaire’). 1950 G. W. Harris in Jrnl. Physiol. CXI. 347 The hypophysial stalk has two main component parts, the hypothalamo-hypophysial tract of nerve fibres associated with the neurohypophysis, and the hypophysial portal vessels associated with the adenohypophysis. 1971 N. G. Sutton Anat. Brain & Spinal Medulla v. 78 A series of hypothalamohypophyseal portal vessels descend in the form of numerous blood sinusoids to end among the cells of the adenohypophysis. 1972 Nature 5 May 15/1 These connexions.. may prove to be an important component of the pathways which subserve the marked effect of light on the hypothalamo-hypophysial activity.

Also hypothaˌlamico-hypoˈphysial, -eal a., in the same sense.

1934 Trans. Coll. Phys. Philadelphia II. 223 Diabetes insipidus and Fröhlich's syndrome are due to disturbances of this hypothalamico-hypophyseal mechanism. 1944 J. Hoffman Female Endocrinol. xv. 226 A neuro-endocrine unit which has recently attracted much attention is the so-called hypothalamico-hypophyseal system. 1961 Lancet 2 Sept. 522/2 Lesions have been found in the hypothalamicohypophyseal system in only a few cases of primary diabetes insipidus.
