(ˌæksəʊˈpəʊdɪəm)
Pl. -dia.
[mod.L., f. axo- + -podium podium.]
A pseudopodium, stiffened by an axial filament, found in some Heliozoa and Radiolaria.
1893 in Funk's Standard Dict. 1912 E. A. Minchin Introd. Study Protozoa v. 48 Pseudopodia of the radiate type are generally supported by an axial rod, a secreted structure of firm, elastic nature, and are hence known as axopodia. 1959 Chambers's Encycl. XI. 285/2 It has been suggested that axopodia are in origin flagella that have lost the power of rhythmic contraction. |
