1819 J. G. Children Chem. Anal. 433 The authors [Welter and Gay Lussac] propose to name this new acid, the hyposulphuric, by analogy with the hyposulphurous, to denote that it contains less oxygen than sulphuric acid, and more than sulphurous acid. 1894 Roscoe & Schorlemmer Chem. I. 415 Dithionic Acid (H2S2O6)..formerly called hyposulphuric acid, was discovered by Welter and Gay Lussac in 1819.
