  The name (Pontius Pilate) of the Roman procurator of Judæa concerned in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ; hence allusively as a term of reproach. Also, the character of Pilate in the mystery plays; hence Pilate's voice, a loud magisterial voice (obs.).
