angio-
first element in many compounds, representing Roman transliteration of Gr. ἀγγεῖο-ν a vessel, receptacle, dim. of ἀγγε- (ἄγγος) a chest, box. Now used chiefly in terms relating to seed- and blood-vessels. Sometimes spelt angeio-; but Roman ī is the true equivalent of Gr. ει. Except where the stress falls on the o (ændʒɪˈɒ-), the pronunciation ought to be (ænˈdʒaɪəʊ) for (æŋˈgaɪəʊ-) but (ˈændʒɪəʊ-) is in common use.
