  A crystalline alkaloid, C8H13NO , formally derived from tropine by oxidation of the hydroxyl group.

1896 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXX. 327 Tropinone..is prepared by the cautious oxidation of tropine by means of chromic anhydride in glacial acetic acid solution. 1917 Ibid. CXI. 764 Tropinone was also obtained by the hydrolysis of the product of condensation of succindialdehyde with ethyl acetonedicarboxylate and methylamine in alcoholic solution. 1980 Nature 27 Mar. 383/3 Willstätter synthesized tropinone, the parent of cocaine, around 1900.
