hetærolite

hetærolite Min.
  (hɛˈtɪərəʊlaɪt)
  [f. Gr. ἑταῖρο-ς companion (see quot. 1877) + -lite.]
A black oxide of zinc and manganese, ZnMn2O4, isostructural with hausmannite and found in New Jersey associated with franklinite and with chalcophanite.
The mineral of quot. 1913 was later regarded as a separate species and named hydrohetærolite.

1877 G. E. Moore in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. & Arts XIV. 423 From its invariable association with and close genetic relation to chalcophanite, I propose for the species the name Hetærolite. 1913 Amer. Jrnl. Sci. XXXV. 601 The herærolite from Leadville was found..about 700 feet below the surface. 1928 [see hydrohetærolite s.v. hydro-]. 1942 Amer. Mineralogist XXVII. 50 It was..proposed by Palache to adopt Moore's name hetaerolite for the anhydrous mineral, analogous to hausmannite,..since this was the sense of the original definition. The actual material of Moore..was separated under the name hydrohetaerolite as a distinct species. The hydrous mineral from Leadville..also is to be classed as hydrohetaerolite.
