  A combination of iodine with another element or radical, containing the smallest proportion of iodine: opposed to per-iodide. Formerly also called protiˈoduret. Now usually otherwise expressed, as protiodide of iron = ferrous iodide, Fe I2; protiodide or protioauret of mercury = mercuric iodide, Hg I2.
