A malignant tumour, usu. of the brain or optic nerve, believed to be derived from spongioblasts.
1918 Neurol. Bull. I. 276/2 He [sc. Kaufmann] suggests the name columnar cell glioma and provisionally the term spongioblastoma. 1925 Arch.
