A small arctic whale; supposed to be the young of the common whale, Balæna mysticetus.
1874 C. M. Scammon Marine Mamm. i. v. 60 The whales of this sea [Sea of Okhotsk]..are the same species as those of the Arctic; although in the bays is found, in addition, a very small whale called the ‘Poggy’, which yields but little oil. |
