  Belonging to the family Papayaceæ (sometimes reckoned as a suborder of Passifloraceæ), of which the Pawpaw-tree, Carica Papaya, is the type. So paˈpayad (-ad 1 d), a papayaceous tree or shrub; paˈpayal a., allied to the Papayaceæ; n. a plant of the papayal alliance; papayotin (pəˈpeɪəʊtɪn) Chem., a ferment, akin to papaïn, contained in the sap of the pawpaw-tree.
