combining form of L. pinna, penna wing, fin (cf. ancient L. pennifer, pinniger, etc.). Hence piˈnniferous [-ferous], piˈnnigerous [-gerous] adjs., bearing or having fins. (Cf. penniferous, pennigerous.) pinniˈnervate, pinninerved adjs. Bot., pinnately veined (= penninervate). pinniˈsected a. Bot. = pinnatifid, or ? pinnatisect (see pinnati-). pinniˈtarsal a. [tarsal], ‘having pinnate feet, as a swimming-crab’. pinnitenˈtaculate a. [tentaculate], ‘having pinnate tentacles, as a polyp’. See also pinniform, -grade, -ped.
