  Each of the two lateral portions of the prothorax, or first thoracic somite of an insect, lying one on each side of the pronotum. Hence proˈpleural a., of or pertaining to the propleuron.
  Each propleuron consists of three parts named proëpimeron, proëpisternum, proparapteron. (Cf. mesopleuron and metapleuron, with their divisions mesepimeron, metepimeron, etc.)
