thiopentone Pharm.

  [f. thio- + pentobarbitone.]
  A sulphur analogue of pentobarbital sodium that is given intravenously as a short-acting general anæsthetic; sodium 5-ethyl-5-(1-methylbutyl)-2-thiobarbiturate, C11H17N2O2SNa. Also called thiopentone sodium. Cf. Pentothal.

Pollitt Depression & its Treatm. iv. 50 It [sc. electro⁓convulsive treatment] is usually administered after the patient has been anæsthetised with thiopentone sodium. 1977 Proc. R. Soc. Med. LXX. 782/1 Generalized reactions were not seen for the first twenty years after the introduction of thiopentone.
