retentate
(rɪˈtɛnteɪt)
[f. L. retent-iō a holding back (cf. retention) + -ate, as in distillate, filtrate, etc.]
That which fails to pass through a semi-permeable membrane, and so is retained on dialysis.
1959 Turner & Feinberg in Nature 10 Oct. 1139/1 We propose the term ‘retentate’ to designate those substances which are retained by semipermeable membranes in the course of dialysis. 1974 Ibid. 8 Nov. 176/1 The haemagglutinating activity in galactose..was found in the retentate and could be concentrated quantitatively and washed free of monosaccharide by ultrafiltration. 1977 Ibid. 6 Jan. 92/2 Retained molecules (the retentate) remain in the original sample container. Both the retentate and the filtrate fractions can be recovered. |
