A. n. = smaragd.
This use is due to a misunderstanding of the Vulgate text of Rev. iv. 3 ‘similis visioni smaragdinæ’, which in turn is an inaccurate rendering of the Gr. ὅµοιος ὁράσει σµαραγδίνῳ.
