trans. To impregnate (a material) with something prior to mechanical processing. So pre-ˈimpregnated ppl. a., spec. 1933 Jrnl. Inst. Electr. Engin. LXXIII. 353/2 The design conditions are extremely simple as the dielectric depends solely on the use of the pre-impregnated paper, the selection of gas-space dimensions, and the pressure of the gas. 1937 Ibid. LXXXI. 634/1 With proper attention to the physical properties of the impregnating medium, this pre-impregnation ensures the absolute definition of the gas spaces up to the maximum working temperature of the cable. 1958 Times 1 Dec. 2/5 Aeroplastics Limited..have commenced production of their new process of preimpregnating glass fabric. 1958 D. J. Duffin Laminated Plastics iv. 73 Either a dry or preimpregnated glass reinforcement is now laid in the mold. 1960 Jrnl. Inst. Electr. Engin. VI. 694/1 The pre-impregnated cable does not suffer from this kind of trouble because the paper is dried and impregnated in sheet form before application to the cable. 1965 Mod. Plastics Encycl. 1966 628/1 A preimpregnation step is frequently used, in which the reinforcing web is passed through a resin bath before lay-up. 1970 Materials & Technol. III. xii. 871 Mats or fabrics are pre-impregnated with resin by passing through baths containing a solution of the resin. The solvents are removed by drying and the material is worked into mouldings. 1971 Nature 30 July 305/2 These preimpregnated layers are then moulded together in the normal way under heat and pressure, and cured.
