  A proprietary name in the U.S. for a glucoside derivative of 4,4{p}-diaminodiphenyl sulphone, C12H12N2O2S, which has a bacteriostatic action and has been used esp. to treat leprosy.

XL. 319/1 The following compounds have been investigated: p-aminobenzene sulphonamide (sulphanilamide),..a glucoside derivative of 4:4{p} diamino diphenyl sulphone (promin). 1948 Call-Bulletin (San Francisco) 12 Apr. 3/6 Diasone and two companion drugs, promin and promizole, have shown promise against both tuberculosis and leprosy but they have some disadvantages. 1958 New Scientist 11 Sept. 798/2 Eventually it was found by Dr. John Lowe in 1948 that the simpler parent compound—diamino diphenyl sulphone..(now called dapsone) was more active than promin. 1971 W. H. Jopling Handbk. Leprosy vi. 52 Dapsone..had the advantage over Promin of being much cheaper and of being suitable for oral administration (Promin has to be given intravenously).
