  1. An optical instrument through which objects appear multiplied; a multiplying-glass: spec. (see quot. 1842). Cf. polyoptron.

1704 J. Harris Lex. Techn. I, Polyscopes, or Multiplying Glasses, are such as represent to the Eye one Object as many. 1842 Brande Dict. Sc., etc., Polyscope,..a lens plane on one side..of which the convex side is formed of several plane surfaces, or facettes, so that an object seen through it appears multiplied.

1881 Eng. Mechanic 18 Feb. 562/1 M. Trouvé described his polyscope, an apparatus for examining cavities of the body with the aid of incandescent platinum. 1895 Syd. Soc. Lex., Polyscope, an apparatus invented by Trouvé, consisting of a combination of the instruments for visual examination of the eye, ear, larynx, urethra, etc., and fitted up with an electric light.
