-geny

-geny
suffix = mod.F. -génie, in mod. scientific language appended to Gr. stems to form ns. with the general sense ‘mode of production (of something specified)’, as in anthropogeny, biogeny, cosmogeny, geogeny, ontogeny, phylogeny, physiogeny, etc. Most of these ns. have either corresponding ns. in -genesis, or adjs. -genetic (in many instances both of these).
[The suffix may be regarded as representing Gr. -γένεια, the ending of abstract ns. f. adjs. in -γενής (as in ὁµογένεια, f. ὁµογενής): see -gen. But in all probability it was actually f. the root gen- in genesis, etc. (vaguely apprehended as meaning ‘to produce’) + -y3, F. -ie.]
