[ME. marschalcie, a. AF. mareschalcie (OF. mareschaucie):—Frankish L. mariscalcīa, f. mariscalcus marshal n. The β forms represent the OF. mareschauciée (mod.F. maréchaussée), an extended form corresponding to med.L. mariscalciāta (1232 in Du Cange). As now used, the word is prob. a new formation on marshal n. + -cy, parallel with generalcy, captaincy, etc.]
