▸ Astron. In form Carina. (The name of) a constellation of the southern hemisphere between Volans and the Milky Way; the Keel. Also (in form Carinae) used as a postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Car (without point).
The constellation was formed, together with Puppis, Pyxis, and Vela, from the division of the former constellation Argo in the 19th cent.
