palæencephalon

palæencephalon Anat.
  (ˌpæ-, ˌpeɪliːɛnˈsɛfələn)
  Also (chiefly U.S.) paleencephalon.
[a. G. palaeencephalon (L. Edinger Vorlesungen über den Bau der nervösen Zentralorgane des Menschen und der Tiere (ed. 7, 1908) II. xvi. 241): see palæo-, paleo- b and encephalon.]
The phylogenetically older portion of the brain, as contrasted with the neencephalon.

1917 Jrnl. Compar. Neurol. XXVIII. 216 It is becoming increasingly evident that the key to this difficult question is to be sought in the subcortical centers of the primitive types, that is, in the ‘old brain’ (palaeencephalon of Edinger, segmental apparatus of Adolf Meyer). 1972 [see neencephalon].
