  [mod.L., f. Gr. πρωτο- proto- + ἵππος horse. The Gr. word would have been *πρωθίππος, *prothippus.]
  An extinct genus of quadrupeds, ancestrally related to the horse, whose fossil remains are found in the Pliocene of North America.
