What is the difference between a nuclear fission and a nuclear fusion reaction?

Nuclear fission is the splitting of an atom into two or more smaller atoms, releasing energy in the process. Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, is the combination of two or more small atoms into a single, larger atom, releasing a large amount of energy. Nuclear fission produces less energy than nuclear fusion. Additionally, nuclear fusion requires higher temperatures and pressures than nuclear fission.
