Explain the differences between endothermic and exothermic reactions.

Endothermic reactions require energy from an external source in order to proceed, while exothermic reactions release energy in the form of heat and light. Endothermic reactions generally absorb heat from their surroundings, resulting in a decrease in temperature. Exothermic reactions, on the other hand, produce energy which increases the temperature of their surroundings.
