Please explain how to find sterling silver at the goodwill, again! drew demonstrates how to test for "real" silver

hey tubers and pickers it's drew the california picker welcome back to my channel california picking and uh god i'm really pumped up today it's a great day to be a picker i've been finding some incredible stuff lately and this is kind of no exception i'm i got silver fever you guys sterling silver fever because i've been finding sterling silver items at the goodwill can you believe that so let's look at these items today so i was going into the goodwill i was looking on the shelf and you know there's all kinds of silver plated items that come in from time to time and of course i have to look at them all and i picked up this and i thought nah this is plate this is not going to be anything and i picked it up and it was light and that's the mark of silver it's really quite light it's the copper or bronze that's underneath the silver plate that makes a plated item heavy and see how all this is pierced that's a really nice pierced candy dish and it's got some interesting uh initials there and i believe that might be a cyrillic or russian symbol at the end i'm not sure but sure enough i turned it over and let's see if i can find the mark it's very faint but it's right there and it says roger brothers sterling really faint i don't know if you can pick that up but really nice find at the goodwill and look at the price a dollar 99 for a sterling silver bowl look at that wow so that was one item now i didn't find this yesterday but i've found this a while back but just waiting to put it into a video with some other silver items and this is a very nice little cool shell ash tray and it's not very thin it's not that lightweight either but it is silver and then you can see the marking right there sterling and it says sterling right there nice find at the goodwill look at the price dollar 99 for those two items and then this i really like this this was in the showcase look how great that is we adjust the light in here a little bit it's a woman's bracelet with possibly green agate stones i thought it might be jade but i think that this is some type of agate really fascinating great links all attached and they have these like nice little prongs that have a design to them but they hold the stones in place really exceptional find and for the goodwill my gosh look at that let me just try to get it on my wrist here so that's sort of what it would look like minus the hairy arm ladies but look at the links is that a great bracelet or what so unique i've never seen anything quite like that so and the best part about it was that i turned it over and it said right there it said 925 mexico let's see if i can get a better view with that mexico 925 so you guys should study your metals and learn what these things are sometimes they're 850 925 and 750 so you need to know your metals and you know what you're looking at because they don't always say sterling see that 925 right there mexico so uh mexican silver is often marked 925 and not sterling sterling is an english um designation but it's all 925 is 92.5 silver and the rest is other filler metals so this is not pure silver but it's as silver as it gets really if you make it with pure silver it becomes too uh too malleable too soft so just for kicks i just thought we would weigh this let's just weigh this right now and we are on ounces right there and let's just weigh this bowl it's quite large it's almost gonna be hard to see the numbers and that's 2.52 ounces two and a half ounce bowl at the goodwill for a dollar ninety-nine really great and then this item .76 so that's three quarters of an ounce for that little bowl and this one we're not going to well i can i can weigh it but it's kind of irrelevant because of the stone weight that's three um 2.67 wow that weighs just a little bit more than the bowl that's pretty surprising very surprised about that but in this case the the weight is really not the issue it's the design and it's the intricacy of the of the workmanship and the overall aesthetic appeal on the on the value of this guy and it was 7.99 and i think let's get to some prices real quick i think this thing is uh this bracelet's got to be 150 to 200 dollar bracelet i'd say easy could be even more than that tell me what you guys think now i've got all hopped up on silver and i was thinking man maybe i can find more so then i found this you guys look at this that's a very large silver bowl with incredible detail around the the rim all those little tassels are all embossed and you have the piercing up there and the rope decoration around the rim with your quilted pattern below and i just thought wow is this what i think it is but i can tell you i was a little disappointed because it's silver plate it's not sterling silver you guys so you win some and you lose some but i really liked it anyway i thought this would be good in a bathroom for towels and soaps and stuff like that but really nice ornate pattern now i'm not sure how they made this this is very fascinating to me there's no seam lines in here you guys no seam seam lines in here this was not made and welded together this was like a chunk down on off some type of form i guess i don't know but really amazing item i paid 7.99 for that and i i did a little precursory test i did it with a magnet first it did not magnetize but copper and bronze does not magnetize either uh and uh but now i'm gonna do a little test for you live on camera so let me just put down the camera for a second i'm on a mini tripod today and what i'm gonna do is and i don't suggest anyone does this at home because i'm a professional so i'm going to put on some gloves normally i'd have thicker gloves but these are the ones i have handy right now gloves and i'm going to use this testing kit which is an acid and as i said don't try this at home and if you do you have to use great care wearing gloves and eye gear and everything else so what i'm going to do is i'm going to do a little test and what i'm going to do is i'm going to scratch a little area here and we're going to test it so i've scratched off a little area right there in a little place that's very non-obvious you don't want to damage this this too much now there's a thing called quadruple plate which means it's been plated four times so it's got a heavy layer of silver on it sometimes you're not you're going to get a false reading that way but i'm going to show you what this stuff does when you apply it to something that's not sterling silver let's go to it now here all it takes is just one little tiny drop and see it turned green that is not sterling silver that means there's copper or bronze or another metal underneath and it's bubbling up right there and what you want to do is you want to cover the bottle close the bottle but there you see the green and it's kind of bubbling right there now if it doesn't turn a color then it's real silver so i'm going to just wipe that off and you try not to let it sit for too long on there because it does corrode but when you wipe it away it pretty much leaves no sign that you've done that and anyways that's how you test silver to tell if it's silver so that's me drew the california picker hope you enjoyed my video on finding silver real sterling silver guys wow pretty cool all right guys share the video hit like leave your comments tell me what kind of silver you found out there i love i love sterling silver anyways guys hope you enjoyed it keep on picking cheers now
