today I'm going to be showing you how to make this cute little felted bird nest with eggs and a little birdie so let's get started with what you're going to need before we get started on our bird I'm going to go through the supplies you're just going to need some brown roving for the nest the blue roving for the bird itself just a little bit of an orange or yellow for the beak and then even less of the black for the eyes you're also going to need a little piece of foam to do our nest around and to do all of our felting on and we're going to be using a felting needle to do our felting you can kind of see the little barbs on there we're going to start with the nest so I've rolled off some of my Brown basically I'm just going to start shaping it with my hands into a nest shape you can go ahead and start using your little piece of foam because this is what we're gonna have to felt against so you mint as well wrap it around the foam and the way you do the felting is we're just going to use the foam to catch the needle and it's going to start pushing all the fibers together and when you're layering you can crosshatch the layers so I've got a general nest shape and basically I'm just gonna continue felting for a while until this starts to take shape I just wanted to show you I've been working on the nest for a little while now it's starting to get a nice shape to it and as you're felting you may want to take the foam out occasionally because it's gonna melt into your foam some and you don't want it to get too hard to get out so I've only been filling from the back side so far but I've got some strays here so I'm going to work at it a little bit from the side and I could really set this on top to you so I'm going to work at this for maybe five more minutes just till I feel like it's got a little more form to it and it's not going to pull apart it's really starting to take shape let's pull this out we've got full-fledged little bird nest haha no pun intended so we're gonna set that guy side and it's time to start on our bird basically you're gonna make four pieces for the bird there's a body two little wings and a head so I'm gonna start with the body I'm just going to roll off some of my roving and you always want to try to just pull your roving apart instead of cutting it because that's going to give you a harsh edge if you cut it with scissors and it is usually pretty loose so I'm going to just gently roll this guy into a little ball and then uh I think it's gonna be enough to get me started but basically I'm going to start felting and on the ends off felt in so I get a more rounded form and then I'll add more if I need to so I'm going to work on this guy a little bit and come back to you okay so I've been working at this guy for a few minutes focusing mainly on the edges and getting them more rounded out it's not looking terribly even yet but this is kind of the shape we're going for so basically you want to just keep felting it until you feel like it's not too squishy right now he's a little squishy on the inside so I'm gonna felt him just a little bit more ok so I've worked at this guy little more knees definitely a lot less squishy than he was he does however have a bunch of little marks for me doing all the felting so I'm gonna just finish by doing what I had recommended before and just putting a really light layer around the outside and that's gonna cover my marks so now that's looking pretty much like a little bird body the next piece I'm gonna do is just the head so it's just going to be round you can roll try to roll up into a little round ball and I recommend doing this in a couple layers to you so will felt the core especially with the smaller stuff be careful of your fingers I'm gonna do one more layer there's a nice little head head body the last thing we're gonna do with some wings we're going to start with a piece just a flat piece and we're just gonna shape it into a wing shape you want there to be a point and you want to curl it's gonna mostly be a flat piece like I said but you want to curl the edges under you don't want to cut and felt around in the shape you'd like it to hold okay so I've been shaping a little bit more but I'm gonna go ahead and finish I've just been folding and tapering so it's starting to look like a wing the very end I'm just gonna felt a little bit now make this the underside where I've been folding so you won't even see this part but now I've got a nice little wing shape I'm gonna attempt to duplicate this and then we'll be ready to assemble
