so now we're going to play the same tune but with a new finger picking pattern and let's take a look at the plot the pattern let's not put any cord down for this pattern let's use the sixth string as the base to start and the pattern looks like this thumb first finger top two strings fingers two and three together back to finger one here it is again now remember as we play this that the fingers are not pulling away they're pulling in towards the palm and we've never really played with more than one finger at once so as long as your fingers are in position we've got base first finger two fingers in the highest two strings pulling in at the same time back to the first finger i want you to try it with me a few times i'll count to four and you come in one two three four so double check yourself as well and make sure that your hand is in the right position a little bit of an arch kind of rounded here we're not pulling away we're pulling in thumb is pulling towards the floor i didn't mention this before but the fingernails on the left hand have to be extremely short but the fingernails on the right hand can have a little bit of a nail and in fact it gets a clearer sound if you do have some nail looks a little odd but it you get a nicer sound when you play finger style if you have a little bit of nail there okay so that's our new pattern thumb first finger top two first finger now remember that the bass note is going to change with each chord so on an a chord the lowest string that's played either fingered or open is the a string the fifth string so that's going to be our base for the a chord let's try that together one two three four for the d chord our bass is the fourth string let's try that together nothing changes except for the bass note one two here we go for the e chord slide the finger over just like we know pivot the other two fingers up and the sixth string is your base now so we already played open with the sixth string same deal it's going to be six third string top two third string one two here we go so take a look at your chart and let's play through the changes together let's try to just keep going if you miss a chord just try to jump right in that's the thing about music is you can't stop it it's like time the pulse just keeps on ticking and if you miss a beat you can't rewind you have to just keep going so try to follow along with me okay take a look at your chart i'll count us in one two three four fourth string on the d to the e back to a a again fourth string d back to the d to the e do practice that a few times before you jump right in to the jam track just make sure that you're really comfortable with those chord changes you're really comfortable with the picking this tune does sort of go at a nice clip so it may take you a while till you can really get it up to speed let's try along you'll hear four clicks and we'll come in picking do so so so so there you have another picking pattern take a look at the chart with all of the picking patterns and you can even try to apply a new pattern to that same tune
