good morning good afternoon good evening wherever you are whenever you might be watching this i thought i would give you a little tip i'm getting ready to water bath can some strawberries and some cherries but um i thought i'd give you a few little canning tips and the main canning tip i'm going to give you today is how to find out what your altitude is now on my um i'm in of course i'm in arkansas and you can look at your cooperative extension service website for your state and you'll probably find under food preservation you'll find all your canning tips and your uh freezing and your meat and poultry and stuff like that and you can order uh free at least i can order free from my state uh cooperative extension service i can order these pamphlets and stuff free but that's a good place to start when you don't know how or what you're gonna can but putting that aside i want to show you this really good website it's called you see if i can get my computer to work it's pickyourown.org it is a very good website and the reason i like this website is it's a very quick and easy guide to what items can be water bath canned and what items must be pressure and it goes into all kinds of uh names all kinds of vegetables and fruits i hope you can see this on my on my computer but i really want to uh get you interested in this site right here pickyourown.org exactly like it sounds all one word dot org they have all kinds of tricks and tips they even tell you where the farms are where you could pick your own berries and fruit and whatever vegetables whatever the case might be now anytime you can it always tells you and i'm going to take you now to the ball site it always tells you that you are to can with your water bath canner or with your pressure canner according to your altitude well now this may be your first time canning or you may have moved and now you're living someplace else and you don't know what your altitude is well let me give you a very easy foolproof i wish i could say foolproof 100 but i'm just going to say a foolproof way of telling what is your altitude so see it always blue book the ball blue book any kind of canning it always says that you must go by your altitude and the the um ball blue book does have an altitude chart that tells you how many minutes and i'm going to insert that right here okay now that you know how long for your altitude how do you find out what your altitude is well that's really simple i'm going to open up google here and i'm going to use dallas texas so if you lived in dallas texas you go to google you put in dallas texas and you do your search and you want to go to wikipedia okay so you're going to click on wikipedia for dallas texas if that's where you live so let's come on let's get it open there we go and right down over here on the right hand side it says elevation dallas's elevation is 430 feet so that would be what you use for your canning now you might say well i don't live in dallas texas well okay here is disney oklahoma disney oklahoma is a little bitty town up in the north uh northeast part of the state of oklahoma uh you blink too fast and you're gonna miss it and i hope nobody in disney takes that as an offense but there's disney oklahoma believe me it's a little bitty town so you're gonna go to wikipedia for disney oklahoma over here in the right hand corner tells you the elevation for disney oklahoma oops is 817 feet so let's do a couple more here let's do topeka kansas so we go to topeka kansas and we open open up wikipedia and over here in the right hand column elevation for topeka kansas is 945 feet it says right there let's do one more ogden utah you go to google you put in ogden utah again you're going to open up wikipedia again over here in the right hand side it's going to tell you the elevation for ogden utah is 4300 feet so you can do this for any city in the united states if you don't know what your elevation is because you've got to know what your elevation is so you know how long your water bath canner or your pressure canner needs to cook uh you've got to know your elevation well it's real simple just type in your name the name of the city where you're at and the state go over here and you you're going to do it in wikipedia we'll do it one more time we're in google and we're just putting in our city and state we're opening up wikipedia and over here on the right hand side right there it is so y'all the next time you need to know like i said maybe you've moved and you don't know what the the time is for where you live or maybe this is your first time canning that's how you find out what your elevation is easy quick simple and i'm going to say well i'm going to say 99 um 99 accurate if you're afraid that maybe this is not accurate which uh now this information here i don't know how accurate that is but i'm going to say this this information is pretty accurate but if you want to just you know be sure then maybe your city if your city is big enough it has a website and it probably has a mayor or whatever and you could call them and ask them but that's my go-to right there so thanks for watching guys and remember
