Please explain how to do chromatography with food dye

tonight I'm taking make science fun in this episode we're going to look at chromatography which is the process of separating a mixture based on the speed of its particles through a particular substance here I'll put a drop of green food dye and as we can see as it travels through the paper we see a blurring and the yellow ring the green food dye is made up of blue particles and yellow particles and the blue particles are traveling faster than the yellow particles and that's separating the two out oh it's so pretty here's a shot from the side clearly see the weak the bit of paper that I've cut out and fold it down is dipping in the water below that speeds the process along this time I'm gonna use blue and yellow food dye and look okay I can go into my green but yet again the blood particles are traveling quicker and so is spreading quicker than the yellow particles and that's causing it to separate oh pretty this time I've got a drop of blue dye red dye and yellow dye we're seeing what we expect with the blue and the yellow the blue is traveling faster than the yolk and the red is in the middle of the wool that was quicker and the red is in the middle so the red must have a particle size in between that of the blue and the yellow it travels at a mid speed well thanks so much for joining me today I hope you've enjoyed this episode and I look forward to seeing you again soon bye
