Please explain how to fix a smelly vacuum - bagged

Hi, I'm Josh from eSpares. If you have a particularly smelly vacuum cleaner
there can be a number of reasons as to why this can arise. Including: a full bag, dirty filters, a blocked
hose and dirty tools and attachments. I'm going to show you how to get a better
smelling vacuum cleaner using this Vax 6131, although the process is largely the same for
all makes of bagged vacuum cleaners. First things first, make sure you unplug your
appliance from the mains before carrying out any work on it. Now, the most imporant thing when you buy
any new bags, new filters or new accessories for your vacuum cleaner, is to make sure that
you've got the right model for it, so that whatever you buy is compatible with your vacuum
cleaner. You can usually find the model number on a
data sticker, which is somewhere on the outside of the machine. The most common reasons to why you might have
a smelly vacuum cleaner is because of a full bag. Most people only tend to replace or empty
the bag when it gets completely full. But if your bag is really smelly, it's probably
a good idea to empty it or replace it on a more frequent basis. To get to the bag in this machine I'm going
to unclip the sides here, lift the lid off and put it to one side. And then remove the filter unit and put that
to one side too. Inside we have a particularly smelly bag,
so to replace it I'm just going to twist the hose at the front and pull it out. Then lift the old bag out and get rid of it. While I've got the bag out of the machine-
there's a bit of dust inside so I'm just going to empty that out like so- and then it's probably
a good idea to spray some disinfectant round inside and leave it to dry. The two types of vacuum bags are fabric reusable
bag- such as this- although if it's really dirty it's probably a good idea to buy a new
one anyway. Or a disposable paper bag such as the one
that goes in the Vax. So to put it back in, just insert it with
the cardboard tab at the front, like you found it before then re-attach the hose, like so. The next most common cause of a smelly vacuum
is the filter. Most bagged vacuums contain two types of filters:
a pre-motor filter which stops the dust and harmful particles getting into the vacuum
and causing problems with the inner workings such as the motor and a post-motor or exhaust
filter which stops the bad smells recirculating into the room while you're using your vacuum
cleaner. This Vax contains an extra pre-motor filter,
which is a cone filter. To replace the cone filter turn the black
filter locking ring and remove the old one then replace it with a new one like so. The filter unit can then be replaced back
on top of the vacuum. I'm now going to replace the exhaust motor
filter. To do this, remove the grill- and as you can
see the post motor filter is looking particularly dusty. I'm going to get rid of that and replace it
with a new one like so. Then reinsert it into the head of the vacuum. After that, the final filter to change is
the pre-motor filter which is found underneath the head. To replace this, simply pull out the old one
and replace it with the new one with the dark side down. Once you've done this the whole head can then
replaced back on the top of the vacuum, like so and clipped down. The final areas to check if you have a smelly
vacuum are the hose and the attachments. The hose can be removed and checked for any
large pieces of debris which may be caught in there and causing a blockage. Or if your hose is a fully plastic one you
can leave it to soak overnight in warm soapy water. Same with the attachments, if they're plastic
just leave them to soak. If you have an attachment with metal on it
such as a metal cleaner head this can be sprayed with disinfectant and wiped clean. If you have an attachment with a roller brush
such as this, it's a good idea to cut out any caught hair or carpet fibres which may
stop the roller brush from moving freely. Once you've done everything you can to get
your vacuum smelling as clean as it can, you have a range of options available to you from
eSpares to get your vacuum cleaner and your carpets smelling as fresh as possible. Ranging from products which you put directly
on the carpet to those that go directly in the vacuum itself. Thanks for watching.
