Streptococcus suis is a peanut-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium, and an important pathogen of pigs. It is also a zoonotic disease, capable of transmission to humans from pigs. Human infection can be severe, with meningitis, septicaemia, endocarditis and deafness as possible outcomes.
