hello and welcome to videojug we're going to show you how to correctly muck out a stable with the help of Equinix pert mailer McEwan she's a British horse society certified instructors and has worked in a Quine horse management for over 21 years step 1 the equipment you will need a wheelbarrow a pitchfork a broom a shovel a pair of rubber gloves but these are optional a sponge and bucket and some clean straw step 2 the benefits of a full muck out it gives your horse a warm clean bed to rest on it protects his legs from injuries and wear and tear on his joints it stops drafts and provides a clean environment for healthy Hoos and Prevention of disease step 3 tie your horse up outside if the weather permits this is better for his respiration plus it's quicker and easier to muck out when he's not in the stable step 4 remove the droppings begin to sweep any clean bedding away from the door to give you a space to put the soiled bedding then place the wheelbarrow across the door with the handles always pointing alongside the stable wall so it's not a danger to your horse if he has to be inside use the pitchfork to remove any visible droppings of the straw bed and put it on the cleared floor near the stable door top tip use rubber gloves to pick up small piles of droppings by hand step 5 remove the soiled bedding now throw any clean bedding up against one of the walls or corners of the stable then remove any wet bedding and place it into the wheelbarrow or near to the door work your way through the whole bed try not to waste any clean bedding as this is costly plus it doesn't rot away sufficiently a soul bedding does step 6 sweep the floor with all the clean bedding now tossed up against the wall sweep the stable floor clean using the broom shovel any final soil bedding into the wheelbarrow and allow the floor to dry completely step 7 bed down shake down the clean straw from the sides of the wall and spread it evenly over the floor with your pitchfork now bring in the clean straw Shay can spread it out to create a second thicker layer of bedding start to build up banks of straw around the edges of the stable by packing it with your pitchfork this is to protect the horse from drafts and knocks and for a totally professional finish fold under the banks with your hands to create a neat firm edge now test to see if you have enough bedding hold the end of the pitchfork in one hand and drop the fork end onto the bed you should not be able to hear the concrete floor underneath top tip if your horse eats his bedding then mix together the old and the new straw to put him off step 8 replace the water now using a sponge and bucket scoop out any of the dirty water from the automatic water drinker and give it a quick wipe over with your sponge or replaces water bucket step 9 finishing touches sweep the entrance into the stable clean fold the front edge of the bed to create a neat Bank give the outside of the stable a quick brush and tidy and finally empty the wheelbarrow on to the Markab to maintain a fresh bed remove any droppings daily and that's how to greatly muck out a stable you
