Please explain how to renovate old cabinets - split-level ranch in plymouth, ma - bob vila eps.406

hi I'm Bob Vila welcome home again we're starting our kitchen remodeling project today and one of the main things we're doing is increasing the size of the kitchen dining area by installing a large wok bay window that's going to increase the feeling of space we're also tackling the kitchen cabinets which are a little bit tired by putting a new kitchen cabinet doors which will make ourselves in the workshop we'll take you on a tour of a fabulous country kitchen on the islands of Nantucket so stay with me it's good to have you home again Sears presents Bob Vilas home again all right let's get together with Reilly and Michael Roach who's the technical rep from the company that's made our Bob a window how are ya very good thanks a beauty now what is it made out of what kind of wood ponderosa pine good to you don't even worry about any imperfections in that not at all and then we've got a beautiful picture window tell me how it's made well this is authentic divided light insulated glass each pane of glass is an insulated unit mm-hmm it's made up of two panes of glass and a low e coating how does that work the low e coating reflects radiant heat to the exterior in the summer to the interior in the winter it also reduces ultraviolet rays so you do have an R factor associated with this glass right that is correct we also have an argon gas in the air space and non-toxic gas that affects the heat and cold transfer what is the R factor two point eight nine not bad that's better than wood and then of course at either side we've got double-hung sash that is correct both Sasha operate go up and down again individual pieces mm-hmm Michael approximately how much is this window it retails it approximately just under $2,000 yeah it's almost like adding on a room Riley what's the first step in installing it the first thing we want to do is take out our existing patio door Bob okay so with any tips on how to take this setup apart yes well well the first thing we want to do is take the hinge pins out of the door so we can get the active door out of the frame and remove some of the weight that's some of the way right all right now the frame for this patio set up is what is it nailed into the stud well yeah but what these folks did and they just nailed it in with some galvanized common nails and you've already got them a little bit loose yeah okay well the installation of the Box Bay is going to be integral with the new deck the replacement backyard deck and what we've already got in place are four footings as you can see these concrete footings are poured in sonotubes and there's a fastener on top they go down four feet and we're going to use the two that are back closest to the house as our primary supports for the Box Bay right what do you figure that thing weighs I would say it weighs about 350 400 pounds is that with the roof we're gonna build well yeah with the roof it's probably more yeah five or six hundred so this is just temporarily being tacked into place right using some strapping pretty good and then the horizontal piece or the header is that yeah it's right around the corner there you get a four by six there we go and this forms our basic structure for supporting this and this is all just being tacked together right now right yes what size nails are we using this is a ha'penny galvanized common and again they're just tacking and holding it together temporarily once the right structure is built then it'll be quite quite sturdy what's the next step Riley well the next thing for us to do is frame this little stud wall right in here where the patio door used to be okay so this section of wall is exactly the same height as structure outside here right yes and we'll just spike it into place or the sixteen penny nails yeah right with the existing frame all right now this other section acts as a tabletop to receive the Box Bay that's right and we'll just give it a nail it in place nice sturdy area okay and now we'll put in some rigid insulation right Michael thank you thanks I'll get it okay we'll take a look from the inside shortly we're gonna break for some messages when we come back we'll be on the island of Nantucket if you ever plan on visiting Nantucket save one day just to wander the village streets here you're gonna see one of the most unbelievable collections of 18th and 19th century American colonial houses captain's houses that you'll find anywhere in New England we're gonna visit Carol Lowry who recently restored this house built I believe in 1820 and we're gonna take a look at what a simple country kitchen is all about good afternoon Bob how are you well we're anxious to see your kitchen thank you Thanks so it's a side entrance colonial and you've done a great job with antiques huh yeah well it's mostly early marriage furniture and family early marriage yeah and this is the kitchen yes my critically like Jim use the contractor so you did all of this huh yes we do now had the house did you have a kitchen in here or what was like system playing room as you see it now and actually just a safe and a hotplate nothing else so it hadn't been remodeled in a long time forever and this is probably an original staircase yes it is going down to the basement yes yeah no this is great you can see the old hand planing marks on the stringer boards here and of course it's just one board thick what's this this is what we built the kitchen of this is a board that came out of the Attic it's about 150 years old so you took up the attic floor to build the kitchen absolutely now shiplap rough on one side planed on the other and yet these boards are still good enough that you can work them they're excellent yeah is that what this is on the refrigerator it is - it really is one well it's great it's a great way of doing it this first time you've done that or is that common I know you have we have done this before actually we make doors cabinets bunk beds really yes anything Zellaby I imagine those early builders would have never guessed that their attic forest would be turned into all of us this is really beautiful yeah so tell me architectural he was the room like this we don't know it wasn't we put this wall in and of course though the window was there and the matching wall to the right here okay and then the does the the door behind you sure this goes to a stairwell okay this store was made out of the Attic boards again that's just three boards rewards with a beard on oh yeah battens on the back sure and of course the old one which we made and you made - we made this out of mahogany made this to match the existing now why mahogany yeah well it's a little Stabler it's in the hard wood a lot harder than the pine yeah and then you've got lots of storage kind of crammed in here in these detail yes this is applying from the Attic again we've made this surprise you can put the the brackets right into a weld Li that's plywood but that's not the old pine there it just works better for us much Stabler and it's uh gives us a nicer finish so you basically built your plywood cabinet and we're faced it we're faced with the old pine same way with this little seat aha storage underneath here keeper linens and yeah you know you notice everything matches up all the beads it is after all a kitchen that doesn't have overhead cabinet so it really relies on all of this built-in storage well we have a we have a nice pantry nice walk-in pantry here to take care of that terrific and on the right of it basically the China covered same thing on the daily China yep so is it a easy kitchen to work your kitchen very efficient right to Lolly's windows is the pleasant room to be in yes but the windows did present a problem for us too because we weren't able to put up cabinets here at you could you have changed the layout of the window all the historic Commission for first we leave the house as is that's right we're in the packet yeah everything preserved which i think is a good idea so you've got had a solution here for them yes we put in a will which I like because it's done gives a place to put plants but a dish to that it moves you away from the window uh-huh and with that it gives you a little more here for working in the countertop this is wonderful deep your your sugar and your flour and all your other stuff out of the way and they can lay out your whenever your cookie sheets or your your flour your what do you call your bread dough yeah works very nicely and then all the front of this is out of the old normal that's right problem this is all the pine from the Attic again mm-hmm it's just put on plywood boxes with modern rollers yeah which makes for very easy opening it's just amazing to me how stable the wood is no checks in and no cracks in it and and some of these boards we're talking 14 inch boards one board and you don't have to worry about it splitting or breaking no there's no cupping at all because of the age once again and we've put oil on these instead of paint that's the secret first of all the wood has been in this house all its life that's right and then you don't paint it you don't seal it you just have oil in it right so the moisture can come and go as the seasons right and that way you don't have to worry about it cracking very very nice now what about this feature well this is our contemporary touch I mean we are in an older home but it is necessary to have space to work and I enjoy talking with the family yeah I also enjoy a lot of small space yeah nice deep deep drawers that he put in here for you a wonderful door that opens from both sides so for trays and ladders it works well in a small cabin on the other side turns out to be a bar you utilize the space in every way magnificent yes yeah and this is real butcher block don't bring the the Thanksgiving turkey right on there and then really do your work where do you bake it though well right over here on our electric oven and our Martin modern stove top with the grill well you were you need that so many nice details yeah you need that but the stainless and the black glass kind of receipt but you've worked in so many nice details in terms of the shelves that I guess are made out of the same barn that's riving floorboards your rice paper and the little brackets and then all your collections and then all kitchen has incredible warmth and I want to thank you for sharing it with us little bacon yeah and congratulations on your craftsman thank you well it's a beautiful job you're gonna break for some messages and then we'll be back in Plymouth we're gonna be working on our kitchen cabinet boilers so stay with us well there's no doubt that our kitchen cabinets need a little help the Peter Clarke and Greg Binford are gonna help us at least refinish the the frames right that's correct Bob this is just pine and it's had a kind of a dark dark stain on it and we want to change it over to a paint job how do how do you go about doing that well first of all Bob everything needs to be sanded thoroughly to ensure that we get proper adhesion for the coats of paint that are gonna follow okay so the primary thing is to hit it with fan pay correct Peter's doing right now but is that all you have to do know after it's sanded as this is already been standard we take a liquid sandpaper and we wipe everything down to make sure there's no dust or any grease or any dirt at all on the surface that's a big loss sir right correct and is that an alcohol based product yes it is fun okay so do you have to wait a long time Greg before you can actually start priming it no the advantage of that is it dries quite quickly and we can go over within 15 or 20 minutes so you've already started putting the primer on here correct over here we've already started to prime and what we're using is not a primer but an undercoat or primers for raw wood to seal the wood in this case the wood has been sealed so what we're concerned with us that the undercoat er adheres to the previously sealed surface okay so that you're going to ensure a good bond between the new paint finish and the old formally warrant all right Bob exactly wonderful and it's not a little bit so it'll dry quickly no this is a water-based product so it'll dry within 30 minutes and then we can begin our finish coat great now the other thing that's gonna make things look different around here all right new cabinet doors that Riley has been making he's got two prototypes for us to look at one of them is just plywood with an applied molding and the other one is a little bit fancier he's been working in the wood shop let's take a look my cabinet doors are made basically out of plywood and of course plywood comes in four by eight sheets right right what kind of plywood is this this is it's a birch veneer three-quarter inch birch veneer which is a good material to use because it really paints well it paints gray takes the pink really well so I start this off now I'll set ok now if you're lucky enough to have a big wonderful saw like this beat the cake to cut the plywood my end inversion yeah all right so now we've ripped the sheet of plywood so that we have the width of our cabinet door and what's the dimension this way the height is that twenty-seven half inches high so we'll just measure it out twenty-seven and a half and we'll score this with a utility knife rather than a pencil we rather than the pencil right because this is going to be a crosscut and we don't want it winter up on this yeah the important thing when when you're making a crosscut on a veneer like this is not to chip it with the blade and the way you avoided is to score it right now we also know that the table on the circular saw is 5 and 1/8 inches so we'll bring this back the framing square five and eighth inches and just clamp it on okay assuring us a nice straight cut it'll be a guide for this off you know we're ready to cut it all right so now the plywood will receive a molding which in fact gives it the look and feel of a paneled door that's right yeah a nice little 3/8 panel molding that's all you need and how do you figure out where to position it right bones we kind of put some marks right on the right on the wood itself again using the framing square using the framing square I'm coming in two inches knowing that the molding is 3/8 inch wide I'll be measuring to the inside yeah it was a 3/8 inch that'll give us a one and a half inch reveal on the exactly and that one and a half inch is real close to more or less than average size of rail and style under the roof that's a pretty standard standard measurement Wow I'll just take ya measure excuse me I'm not gonna measure this I'm just gonna mark this isn't that long point and here's my shot right here I'm gonna cut these on the inside of the 45 because it's a lot easier to see a mark on the inside than the outside now I'm going to use this to mock the other piece that way I know that the two pieces will be identical in size which is what we want and we'll do the same thing for the shorter pieces now we'll just take this smaller piece for us and put a little dab of glue on the back of it and we'll put that into place with some one-inch Brad's same thing with all four pieces be sure the countess ate all of the finish just wipe the excess glue off with a damp rag the painter will take care of filling in the holes right let the painter fill the halls looks pretty good not bad looks a little bit like paneled door yeah looks nice though we got ten more to make that's right all right okay simple and inexpensive we'll have to figure out what color to put on right now we're gonna break for some messages O'Reilly it really makes a difference in the eating part of the kitchen here it's just really beautiful that looks nice now you got a lot of shrimp shingles here what are they for well the opening is always bigger than the window itself so when we're nailing it in we have to put some shims in between the two so it's nice and snug uh-huh and then what size nails just put them in with an apron beautiful and another ten or twelve of those and you'll be done right yeah but we're running out of time for this week it's a wrap I'm home again next week when we'll be continuing with the kitchen remodel I'm going to show you how to reel a maneet your kitchen counters and cut in for the sink we'll also be talking about putting in a new vinyl floor outside you'll be getting started with a paint job on the outside of the house and some of the structural work for the new backyard deck lots of work so don't miss it till then I'm Bob Vila it's good to have you home again you
