because I was running over there we different this year mitigate some of the problems we had last year which was pause we don't Frost protect this vineyard and until last year we really hadn't had any reason to we don't have the infrastructure here to do that so what we've done is we've preprint this vineyard and left several buds on these commies canes that we're now going to start pruning off and by doing this we've done two things one we've gotten the bulk of the growth lasher's growth the brush out of the canopy out of the wires which is basically the most time intensive component of pruning getting all that stuff out so we've gotten all that out which oh and but we've also the second thing we've done left number in order to absorb the energy of the vine as it wakes up in the spring and delay with the emergence of the bugs down here which are the ones that we're going to be so I'd still work with the guys are here pruning just basically helped demonstrate but we're going to wait another week or two before we actually come and do the final pruning but the idea is that the vines will first push out and by leaving them here that can happen if we cut this off now we did that last fall no believe this about a month ago someone so you left the whole everything on until about my stuff yeah we wanted the mines go dormant we made any cuts at all and then we went through and cut the brush out pre pruned it here in order to get the brush out get it mowed a lot of the sheep to work and then also leave these higher growth points to absorb the initial place so once these start to push out we're going to come these off at two but we normally relief on good healthy canes will lead to buds for Spurs we actually crime to a swirl let's cut this off now we call this a spurt so the spur has two buds each of those buds will produce a shoot will grow ideally about three feet final they are but basically we're not going to do the whole thing you know we're going to wait a couple more weeks they're doing it basically to show you all so she's a two-step process been doing yeah that's because of the crop yes we're trying to get across the deck in there you probably not so you're cutting this right down to the very bottom yes we do open both the grappa way yeah which ones grow up take please give them they coming up in about one week oh great baby secret that's it Wow because we want we want to be able to have room for the clusters to grow we want to be able to have air movement in here during the season which is very important than for in preventing excess humidity and stagnant air which causes mildew another poem brought phone so we space these out you know sort of the rule of thumb is if you can put your hand in between each of these locations that's about right it's about six inches where we do and we all go wandering off with to like and everything and by having enough space to bump into them thank you no not necessarily I mean this is also via Blanc here and actually some vineyards do an entirely different type of pruning system on Savion Blanc this is called a spur pruning system because we're leaving Spurs frequently Sonia Blanc is is king and 15 pruning you don't have a core tone arm on each side of the vine you have instead of several spur positions around this crown and those four positions will grow like these but from of one location and so what's what's done is that they will perhaps leave two Spurs but take the cane from from last year's growth and lay them down on the wire just for that year so you you end up with a couple of Spurs here that will grow shoots for next year and they'll have fruit on those as well but you put a fresh cane down every year on the wire and that cane will just be it'll be like a shorty but it will be just like this where I'll have buds all along each of those buds will push one shoot during the year and the idea behind this southern block tends to be a vigorous variety and frequently people have had problems with because of that bigger there's so much shading down in this area that some of these buds actually become infertile and so after a number of years say eight to ten years there they just lose their productivity so by putting a fresh cane down every year you get new buds going down and more even production that's not the case here one because this is not as vigorous a site as as we see in other areas like in the valley where some young block is planted Emily this is vigorous or there's not as much also the style we don't generally pull leaves here that's commonly done in other areas but because we're we have good exposure here we don't really need to and we're also trying to prevent from burning fruit by over exposing it to the Sun so but some places where there's lots of bigger they have to do lots of leaf and so anyway to answer your question there are there are a number of different ways of pruning but this is aspirin system this is probably the most common inherited necklace no this is about 45 degrees this is sort of northeast Southwest the Northeast like because that way the afternoon Sun hit when its hottest at about two o'clock almost straight down the road so if the Sun comes from up here and it's down the road in the proof whereas if you do a straight north/south at two o'clock the Sun so we're here compared to the rope and it really cooked the cluster's right in from that from that time all sorts of debates in the industry about what is the best road when you get the hilly terrain you know this isn't this isn't Matt but where you have steep terrain you're pretty much committed with farming up and down against the contours just so you can drive straight up because if you drive on an incline you know that
