hi I'm Nick Mara with CGAs electric seven dot-com and today I'm here to show you how to install a whole house surge protector first thing you're going to need is a good surge protector one that's got an indicator light and this is not a an easy task you'll be working in an electrical panel so if there's any kind of doubt please hire a local electrician first as I said first thing you'll need is a surge protector the tools you'll need our screwdriver a pair of pliers with insulated handle and a wire stripper so let's get started and as you can see in the breaker panel there are a lot of exposed live parts so again this is not for everyone to install will knock out a knockout it has this particular one comes surface mounted with a thread on it with a lock nut on it most electrical panels will have these pre punched knockout holes it's what we'll need to do is knock that out the diameter is about 7/8 of a whole inch of the hole feed the wires through it put the locking nut on it this is good enough support for the surge suppressor as you see we have two black wires and a white wire we find the white wire the neutral bar coming into the panel that is where the white wire goes we make it a nice semi tight fit while you're strippers just strip off just enough this one this particular one is a stranded wire most of them are we can form this to go around in the back into a screw that holds the wire into the bus and as you can see it comes out the other side there so you know that it is in there good take your screwdriver tighten the setscrew as usual give it a little tug make sure it's making a good connection next thing you'll need is a 20 amp breaker for this particular check with the manufacturer to make sure what size breaker and where to install this this particular one requires a 20 amp breaker to protect this wire in case a surge does come through we don't want it all to catch on fire a surge will a surge protector has movs metal oxide varistors in it let's see we have to make sure to put this wire underneath the screw of the breaker tighten it down I'm Nick Mara with CGAs electric 7 dot-com and that is how to install a whole house surge protector if you have any doubts please contact a local professional in your area thank you
