third-party recruiters to have an effective relationship with an executive recruiter it's important to understand the business model and the role you play as a potential candidate represented by an executive recruiter jobseekers that fail to recognize how recruiting works with an executive recruiter often find themselves frustrated and unrepresented they're not telling you about any open jobs that would prevent you from landing a job fast if your situation changes suddenly so by learning it now you're going to help yourself find a position fast if your situation changes unexpectedly by applying our lesson today on successfully working recruiters you will stay marketable to your network which is one of the many ways to have job security in today's economy and proactively take care of your career in past episodes we talked about the only way to truly protect yourself from job loss is to pretend your fire today and make a list of the activities that you would do to start to find your next job and then keep that list in the works while you're working you'll have your resume and profile ready have your network Prime this is the best path to always be working have career continuity constantly be in progression and not have gaps between employment in episode one the first thing we discussed is dusting off that resume and getting it up to speed and we cut in those first eight episodes how to format your resume according to today's trends and to have maximum impact with your document and then we spent the next four episodes focusing on the other equally important document for you to maintain which is your LinkedIn profile last week we moved into the career maintenance activities that you should be doing by addressing the five most common career mistakes that I see people make every day and today we're continuing with these career maintenance career advancement strategies by understanding how recruiters work and how you can hire recruiter so here goes on these seven points first I'm going to totally up end this you can't hire a recruiter okay that's number one you have to realize the recruiter their executive recruiter works for the client company and not for you the candidate you have to look at the payment trail here the executive recruiter is paid by the company to find precisely the right talent and that company is willing to pay a premium for it typically in a fee of about anywhere from fifteen to thirty percent of that candidate salary in the form of a fear go to the recruiter the candidate that takes the stance that the recruiter is working for them to find a job for them it has already shown the recruiter that candidates lack of business savvy and frankly it's showing your little self-centered did you think it's about you as the candidate don't let this be you savvy candidates recognize the economic aspects of the relationship and works to be a resource to the recruiter the candidate is the product essentially so you're the product for that recruiter to make their client happy recruiters want to work with savvy candidates in essence you cannot hire a recruiter however you can attract the right one with these remaining points we're going to go over today the second point is to take recruiters unsolicited calls now obviously I know that there's always recruiters that are not worth talking to but give it the benefit of the doubt each time you never know when your new best friend is going to be calling with the next best opportunity for you or for someone in your network you have to think multi-dimensional II here these relationships are built over time don't ignore the calls consider it another form of professional networking that's frankly coming to your message box or your inbox or your voicemail three develop an online relationship with recruit you can do a search on LinkedIn you can find them on Twitter you can find them on Facebook in some cases have a conversation just have a conversation put on your schedule to have a conversation maybe every six months just stay in the loop and just as you would in person cultivate a relationship over time gives before you receive and on that note with this fourth point if you're called with a job lead it's not right for you help the recruiter with applicable leads and give information whenever feasible a recruiters lifeline is found in the leads that he or she receives good recruiters will go the extra mile for candidates for people that give them quality information so if you help them savvy recruiters will help you when the time comes next don't waste your recruiters time so if you're about to sample the market test the waters so to speak don't test the waters with a recruiter do that on your own time employ the recruiter so to speak or have them when they call you or you reach back out to them put them into action for you when you're really serious about looking for a job don't shop around on their time because if you waste a recruiters time once rest assured you will not get the opportunity to do that again now if the job that they present to you and you start going through the process for isn't right for you that's one thing but you should be prepared to make the move if the right position presents itself and you go through the process and you still find out it's the right job for you should be prepared to make the move next make yourself worthy of a recruiter receiving a 25-percent fee for roughly twenty-five percent feet give or take as I mentioned in the first point companies are paying recruiters to find the cream of the crop they don't want candidates that the companies can find on their own companies want hard to find desirable passive candidates like I said that the company can't find on their own to be placed by a recruiter you need to have a background and or skill set that Lorne's the fee to be paid to the recruiters around that fifteen to thirty percent route usually it's about twenty-five percent of your salary so help a recruiter market you by being fabulous being in demand in the first place and if you can't get placed by the recruiter it doesn't mean you won't get hired at all there's many other ways to get hired it just means you may have to go a different it's just simple economics you may have to go more the direct route and not through a third party which is not a bad thing by the way because frankly a majority of candidates are hired this way without the fee attached to them being hired so look at the strategy but the key is if you are going to go the route of a recruiter you need to be worthy of a recruiter placing you for that fee and lastly have your resume and LinkedIn profile up to date as i mentioned in point one although is a little misleading in the title admittedly you cannot hire recruiter but you can attract the right one by looking the part and being in demand on your profile and on paper so go back to those earlier episodes get your resume and profile up to speed working effectively with a good recruiter is a lot like other relationships you've developed in life and like all worthy relationships these require time and nurturing and research and if you find you're not getting calls back from executive recruiters you shift gears and put as much effort in with recruiters as you do other relationships because you may have to look at other paths but you will soon find yourself well on your way to having successful dealing with executives recruiters that are right for you using these points applying these seven points will position you to stay in demand with recruiters in your profession and in your industry so where any of these new to you reser prized by the business model or how recruiters work does it surprise you that you can't hire a recruiter and you really thought you could if you have yes to any of these then you're going to want to take our job landing quiz go to job landing quiz calm to see what else you don't know
