Please explain how to clean car windows streak free: the nature of car glass!

in this video we are going to be talking about how to clean interior windows without streaks towels to use products to use and really the nature of window cleaning in general now let's get straight into it what's going on so glad you guys are here and welcome back to the Wilson auto detailing community if you're a professional auto detailer who wants to become more successful and profitable in your business or just a car enthusiast wants to improve your detailing ability then definitely consider hitting that big red subscribe button right below this video so interior windows as a professional auto detailer or even just a car enthusiast windows can make or break your world and many of you know what I'm talking about but really the frustrating part about windows is that they're so difficult to get perfect and they're one of those things that customers and you yourself your eye catches them probably before anything else on the car and so it's like you can do everything else perfectly in the detailing world but then if you kind of skimp on windows it almost looks like the rest of the job you did was not really a hundred percent and so this is an area that I would consider especially in my own pro detailing world a very very important area that I don't need to do quickly I need to take my time and make sure that I get right now I do not know everything about interior window cleaning and I'm still learning a ton and experimenting just like many of you but this video really is just to share a couple insights that I have found in the last seven years of doing this so right now I'm on location detailing an Infiniti g37 I believe and I'm now doing the windows because I have done everything else on the interior so I'm just going to do the windows and then kind of quickly dress the interior with just a quick little protectant but let's talk about the glass for a second the nature of car glass vehicle glass what is one of the main reasons that many Detailers and many car enthusiasts struggle with glass number one because glass just like everything else and a lot of times I compare it to like the car paint because it helps me think and kind of keep it straight in my mind just like you can't wax every car before you clay it or you can't polish every car before you clay it there has to be a preparation stage glass has to have a preparation stage and so many Detailers if they don't know what they're doing or car enthusiasts will just go ahead and spray something like invisible glass or window things like that without preparing the glass first and when you do that you do yourself a serious disfavor because there is so much build-up on most windows because the cars are driven so much that the glass shine doesn't actually clean to the ability that it needs to in order to keep those streaks at a minimum or completely at zero and you end up actually not shining the window but more smearing around those oils and things that are on the windows so how does things get on the windows and what are on the windows let's talk about that so though you can't see it with like your naked eye on the interior of this window there are several things now let me point out the first one with this car in particular because this car is a weekend driver this is not my clients main vehicle this is just his fun weekend you know top down outing car this car like most clients do with nicer cars because they don't know exactly what they're doing because they're not professional Detailers they will address the black trim themselves with like tire shine or this overly shiny oily gross sort of dressing that I personally hate when you dress things like these top plastic pieces on the door or you dress things like the dashboard with those horribly / shiny oily dressings and products and it's summertime in Middle Tennessee like it is right now and it's literally 90 degrees that stuff begins to like roast on the dashboard and roast on these plastic pieces and it almost creates like an evaporation like a steam where it begins to come off of the dashboard these oils and these gases lift off of the plastic and stick like no other to the glass window which is one really large reason that I don't use overly shiny dressings or overly oily dressings on the interior I like a nice matte finish it not only helps me kind of see the work I'm doing and the actual cleaning I'm doing but it also makes my life way easier if I come back and do this car again the windows are not quite the same challenge as they are the first time around so once again those oily dressings are a no-no for the windows the other thing that made kind of obvious to you guys and by the way there's some wind chimes in the background so if you're wondering what that noise is it's these like five wind chimes that are huge attached to this tree but the other thing that really hurts windows and detailing windows is actually just the driver themselves on the passenger themselves if you notice if you live in like a colder state in the wintertime when you get into your car all the sudden your windshield or your windows will like fog up and literally it just comes from you stepping and sitting into the car and you have to turn the defrost on well why does that happen because outside it's really cold and inside your breathing warm air and so all this condensation happens and as you breathe and even just you know almost like sometimes even as you sweat and just stuff comes out of your body that stuff actually sticks to the window as well so your breath oils from your skin sometimes people touch the windows to push the car open which please do not do that it only makes your life much much harder but you got fingerprints you got your own breath you got sweat you got condensation all those sort of things not to mention a lot of people don't detail their cars in the wintertime so you have all this build-up over an entire season then it gets warm outside and something clicks and customers heads where they're like I need to get my car detailed cuz it's hot outside and then people like me or you professional Detailers out there have to deal with all that buildup on the windows so the next question is just how do you get that buildup off before you actually shine the window with your particular window shine well the answer that question is actually pretty simple let me explain to you guys how I do it and how a couple other Detailers do it I know Detailers who actually use things like McGuire's all-purpose cleaner diluted ten to one fifteen to one even sometimes twenty to one on windows and they wipe it down with all-purpose cleaner some people even heavily dilute certain degreasers that are a little bit less intense to get that fog off of the windows but what I like to use rather than all-purpose cleaner and rather than degreasers is actually a fifty-fifty solution of distilled water and alcohol why do I use distilled water because it's purified there's no minerals nothing like that that's going to be rubbed across the paint or that's going to increase the ability to streak why do I use alcohol alcohol rubbing is a is a drying agent and so much like you go swimming and you have like water in your ears if you don't get that out you get swimmers ear but if you drop some drops of alcohol in your ear and let it sit for a second it pulls all that water out and then you can shake your head and there's no water in your ears it's kind of like what it's doing to the window it's drying up all that fog drying up all that condensation all that dressing that's evaporated and oily things that have stuck to that that water and window shine don't have the ability to actually get off now the other secret is as many of you guys know the mr. Clean Magic Eraser just like I use this in a ton of other videos I also use it for windows I had a detailer in my area about three years ago actually explain this to me how you can use the Magic Eraser on car windows so when you have a particularly hammered window or particularly oily foggy window a lot of times that's going to be the front interior windshield because that tends to receive or get most of the fog most of the oils I will use not only my 50/50 alcohol distilled water solution and sprayed on the window I will work in this solution to the window with the mr. Clean Magic Eraser so let me just show you guys how this is done so obviously it's very simple I don't spray a ton on the window I'm not trying to over saturate it but I'm certainly not like scared to use it and then once again this 50/50 distilled water alcohol solution is right here I work it in with the Magic Eraser just like this I'm not putting a ton of pressure I'm not trying to break the window at the end of the day I don't need to put a ton of pressure because the product the alcohol is gonna do everything it's got to dry everything it doesn't take a bunch of pressure so I just work it in like this and as I'm working it in I'm trying my best to get in these corners down here because at the end of the day in the detailing world it's not really what you do clean it's what you don't clean that gets noticed and that gets you kind of a bad reputation so once again I work in the alcohol all down the corners I'll shove my magic eraser down in these hard-to-reach areas and I don't have to spend a ton of time doing this I'm just overcompensating because I know you guys want to be able to see this so the magic eraser is not going to really absorb anything and then just so you guys know if the window is extremely hot like I I like to work in the Sun if it's extremely hot you'll want to use a little bit more product and you might want to dry it pretty quickly because it will flash dry in the Sun alcohol tends to do that you know by itself already so you want to be careful about that then I'm going to take a rag and I am going to mop up what I just did I'm gonna have a wet side to my rag and I'm going to have a dry side to my rack so just like I wax and I buff off I want to now turn it to my dry side and I want to buff off any sort of watermark anything that I might have missed and I am finished now the other thing that is a very big variable in these window situations or is the towel itself that you're using this is what we call in the detailing world a waffle weave towel it's kind of like a mesh sort of material it's it's it's it's got a specific pattern to it basically why these waffle weave towels are so great is because there's there's they're more absorbent than other towels because of their design I don't want to go into exactly why that is in this video it's just not the purpose of this video but basically they're going to absorb at a little bit higher level than your traditional maybe microfiber or traditional towel the other kind of towel that you can use is going to be what we call specifically a glass cleaning towel in the detailing world it's going to be a very tight weave so it's not going to be like your traditional microfibers that have more loose kind of a higher GSM a higher pile to them this is going to be a very low pile and it might not even be microfiber at the end of the day I don't know if you guys can see this in the camera but it's extremely extremely tight and these actually absorb very little once again I don't want to get into exactly why that is in this video that will be for a different day but basically this really tight weave side is going to be to work in the alcohol and this other a little bit higher pile looser side is going to be the drying agent and these are specifically designed to kind of keep streaks from happening the only other towel that I would really suggest is going to be these surgical towels or a totally new microfiber towel but these surgical towels once again are extremely tight weave okay I like them a lot because they're big they're tight weaves they don't leave any lint on the window because no lint is coming off because it's so tight and they're reusable they're reasonable they're reusable so they last a very long time so what I'm going to go ahead and do is do exactly what I just showed you guys to all of the rest of the windows on this Infiniti g37 then I'm going to follow up with a window shine and explain further okay so now every single window including the front interior back interior windshields are totally D fogged D fingerprinted de-oiled with the 50/50 alcohol and water and the magic eraser now this next part is extremely important and I want to explain a couple things that I feel like a lot of people don't understand and even some Detailers don't explain very well when you are dressing interior windows and interior glass after you have prepared it okay so this would be like waxing the paint after you clay it the windows prepared and it's ready to be basically dressed a lot of people are going to use a product like invisible glass glass cleaner by stoner do I like this product yes I do now some people will dress interior windows with things like McGuire's synthetic Express spray wax which of course is dedicated for the paint but can be used on the interior on interior plastics leathers all that sort of stuff I am going to dress the interior with the Maguire's synthetic Express spray wax now why am I going to do that number one it's easy goes on easy comes off easy number two it's very economical so I can use a lot of it I don't really have to be concerned about how much I'm using number three I would consider it a more of a value proposition for my customer because not only are you dressing it but you are protecting the interior window so it gives my customer what they want a protected clear awesome window and it makes my life easier if I come back to detail this window at a later date now what is the catch because one thing that I feel like a lot of Detailers do not address who are even on the internet addressing things because I try to stay up to date with what people are saying so that I can know what I need to address one thing that I think people don't address with interior windows is the towel itself yes I showed you guys some towels you can use but when you are dressing interior windows and you are using a used towels specifically a used microfiber you will get lint and fibers all over the interior window no matter how well you dress it and it will piss you off because it's like impossible to remove them once they're on there and so what is the secret to not doing that well the reason it even happens in the first place is because the more you wash microfiber towel is the more obviously they break down and degrade it's funny to me when Detailers like teach about that I'm like wouldn't that be common sense that as you wash something it breaks down and it degrades anyways like everything else in life but once you wash this a bunch of times obviously the fibers start to peel off it starts to pill but if you use a new microfiber then everything is very tight on here even if the gsm is between you know three 350 everything is very tight because it's new so if I use this to dress the interior window because it's a new microfiber I'm not going to get any fibers anywhere and I can move on quickly give my customer what they want and get what I want now I know what some of you are thinking Luke how in the world is it economical to use a new microfiber towel for every single car window or car that you do because I don't have the money to go buy it you know new packs of microfiber towels every time I'm doing a car just for the windows well lucky for you you don't have to use a new one every single time but here is a good strategy pick a color that you want to dedicate for windows okay if you want to use microfiber towels pick a color that you want to dedicate to windows alright then each one of those is only used for the interior window it's used for nothing else then when those are dirty they all get washed together with absolutely nothing else in the washer then they all get dried together on the very lowest setting and what I have found is that when you are using microfiber towels specifically for windows only interior windows and only something like an interior spray or an exterior spray wax these towels will last between three and four times before you have to toss them because they're leaving lint on the windows and fibers on the windows or you just move them to another job so if you do the math if you buy these let's say at Costco 436 in a pack 36 times four I mean that's well over a hundred cars for a thirty six pack of microfibers that cost you fifteen dollars so when you really do the math it might seem crazy to use a new one or a just washed one you know maybe two or three times washed one every single time but at the end of the day the math actually works out in your favor so let me show you guys how I do this to the window it's very simple obviously I fold it into fourths just like I would anything else if I was waxing the paint I'm gonna spray the interior wax on to the glass some people spray it onto the microfiber if that's what you prefer you can do that I like working it into the glass I have my wet side and then I buff it with my dry side another amazing thing about the Maguire's X wax is that yes it protects but it also makes things much easier to clean the next time around and I know that I already said that but for those of you who are in the detailing world and you know how annoying glass is an automotive glass and car windows something that will help you clean it the next time is like a no-brainer it's like to clean something like windows in an easier way you know sign me up whatever it takes so that is it now the interior glass is dressed it is cleaned it is perfected now the only other tip I can give you guys is that after you do the exterior glass you need to relook at your windows because once the outside is clean then you're going to be able to see through it see if there's any streaks which may be a little bit more difficult to do if the exterior is not clean which is why some Detailers do the outside windows first but once again guys this is my strategy and cleaning automotive glass car glass windows there are many different approaches this is the one I choose to use most of the time so for those of you who liked this video and it added some value to your life definitely hit the thumbs up button if you have any questions comments concerns hook up all that
