hi I'm doctor Justine Lee and I'm an emergency critical care veterinary specialists and toxicologist and I wanted to demonstrate today how to put eyedrops or eye medication into your dog now this can be a little bit hard to do so I always tell people try to have someone help you if possible now most of the time there's two different types of medication we'll put in eyes it's either eyedrops or a lubrication like a salve so talk to your veterinarian about which one's going to be easier or which ones better to medicate your pets eyes now I'm gonna demonstrate eyedrops first and you never want to use eye drops that are human eye drops without talking to your veterinarian because sometimes they have several aids or different antibiotics so always make sure that you're using a veterinary prescribed I drop the first thing you want to do is just open up the cap and make sure you keep the cap clean in other words you don't want the tip of the cap actually touching your dog's eye what I like to do is just gently lift my dog's head I'm going to use my right hand and right hand it to open up the eyelid with one hand use my thumb to pull down on the bottom lid and basically add the eye drop from a couple of centimeters away and you'll notice that your dog will blink and that will help distribute the medication across the eye what you don't want to do is you don't want the tip of the eyedrops to actually touch your dog's eye so again spread the eyelid with one hand use a thumb to pull down the other eyelid and hopefully your dog will be able to handle that always give them a treat right after just so they associate with something positive the next type of medication I wanted to show how to give is a lubrication and the one mistake I see people making when they lubricate their dog's eye is they put way too much medication on you only need about the size of a quarter of a grain of rice when you're putting a lubrication in the eye so again make sure not to touch the tip of the lubrication to the eye you don't want to contaminate it and you're gonna do a very similar method where you're gonna gently lift your dog's head with your right hand elevate the eyelid with your bottom you're gonna use your thumb to pull that lid open and you're just gonna gently add in that lubrication and you'll notice your dog blinking and that will again help distribute the medication across your dog's eye good play buddy and that's how you medicate your dog's eye
