Please explain how to instruction for washing and dyeing wool roving and alpaca fleece.

hi there today we're going to be dyeing roving over a propane stove this here is Shetland into the pot and then I will press it down into the water I started out by weighing this out I have one pound to be placed in the pot here I'm gently pressing it down into the water I do not want to agitate this any more than I possibly can so today I have chosen Dharma Dharma acid dye berry crush this is its color and we're going to put this on the Shetland Brown fleece roving I started out by I'm heating up my water to 212 degrees boiling which I will pour into my die first we're going to measure out the powder we need powder dye into a glass jar so here we have our die Oh gorgeous and I have my scale tared to zero and I like to measure mine out so we're dying one pound and in this die it asks for 0.33 ounces approximately give or take a few per pound so I'm going to go ahead and add a little extra just because I'm going over a brown okay got it measure I'm going to show my water to heat up we're almost there okay so here I have poured a little bit of water into my die turn it up to get it to dissolve I'm adding my hot water stir it up little more it's neck Orcas oh I'm excited you want this really well mixed up so this is something I like to do first get it nicely dissolved before I place it into the pot of fiber now this particular die I have chosen today it does not have the letter P after it when I look at some of my other colors I've chosen there is a P after it those are harder to dissolve so you need to give yourself more time in the dissolving process okay now we're going to take this careful this glass is hot don't want to burn yourself I'm going to take it over to my die and I'm doing this one-handed so could be a little tricky I'm going to pour it around the edge just a little at a time since we do not want to stir this fiber much we do not want felting no no okay to rinse out like jar a little bit get everything I can out of my color okay maybe gloves should be better then I find my stir stick here it is I'm gently gently gently gently going to just try and mix my color in a little bit and to get to the bottom of the pot again I do not want to touch this fiber very much or it will sell okay we're just going to let that sit and share everything's in the water we're going to watch our temperature like a hawk looking for mouse so right now we're looking for that 200 mark my lid back on and if you have a wonderful husband like me he found this assembly on Craigslist for $75 and it came with a strainer pot which I forgot to put in it the first time but that's okay we'll deal with that later and I'm going to go ahead and crank up my propane again and get this going okay [Applause] I'm checking my pot we're getting closer meanwhile I have more guys so we talked earlier about the letter P so this one is peach blush with a P and again we're using Dharma acid dye so we need to make sure this dissolves very well so we're going to turn on our scale and it's my jar clean jar by the way I'm changing colors I do not want pink in my teach at this time so I'm going to do one pound of fiber I'm going to measure 0.33 or approximately onto my scale this is a lighter color I don't know my motto is go bold or go home but don't cheat yourself on your diet what come on Emma if I'd be a to purple hair sometimes like Oh see now there we go that's good enough for me make sure you always cap your guys you don't want it flying around or get an extra water in it when you don't want it hard to do with one hand all right there we go all right I also made sure my measuring spoon was free of any other color guide now in this one I'm just a hard guy to dissolve I'm just adding my very hot water it's a little bit I want to kind of make a slurry roll that around you can see there's little bits of dice so stuck to the side in the dark and that's going to take a while for it to dissolve there's other things you can put in your bath water to salt help so far I haven't needed to do that it's going to lessen yes gettin hittin soap while we get ready for our next batch again it's important to keep an eye on your temperature critical to not boil I'm going to go ahead and turn this up a little more because I'm impatient okay we can see we're almost 200 I see my fibers blowing a little bit by my wooden spoon I'm going to poke it down oh look we got call alright here we go I turned that off because I am blessed with this wonderful big pot of water and it holds its temperature so our goal is to have and I'm poking at this and I shouldn't be stop just resist poking your fiber alright so we're at 200 degrees I'm going to shatter this up and I'm going to watch it closely we want to keep it at 200 for 20 minutes and then we will add our citric acid meanwhile I'm cooking up something for my husband he bought these they were a great deal there gunstocks believe it or not and I'm going to change him from pink to hopefully using Rit dye into graphite they were cheap on the Internet is it cheap buy so here we go says I need to add half of this into my pot and we're going to see if we can dye something synthetic there we go it's not an exact science and we're going to keep that at 200 degrees for 30 minutes I like to keep life interesting I'm cooking up three pots at one time so there we go 200 degrees I'm going to crank this up just a little bit this pot is not today hot as long yeah I'm preparing my water for my peach that we talked about earlier and again I'm watching my pot here I don't want it to boil all right here we have a tubful of alpaca I'm washing I'm trying out this power scour by unicorn fiber and we'll see how that goes I measured out two pounds of dry fiber which we're going to die in a little bit and I'm going to pull this out of here and put it into another bucket I am filling with water to rinse get that soap out of there you don't want any soap in your fiber when you go to diet soap is your number one factor in helping belt and we're not felting today we hope bless my good friend Molly she came up with this strainer device it's lovely it's plastic chicken wire it's wonderful to pull fiber out of a tub be placed into the next rinse tub without a whole lot of fuss and losing big chunks of fiber so just as in any natural fibers you don't want to to work it hard or it will become felt and that is not our goal today and also just as a side note you see me putting this on the gravel this is big gravel you don't want to put this where it's going to attract any dirt I've been dying out here for a while and all the little dirt has been washed away and I feel confident as long as it's on my mesh I can put it on this gravel and we'll be fine so now my bucket is just about ready to have my fiber placed in it again you don't want to agitate it alpaca felts just as easily as many of your sheep wolves and I'm just going to placing it in there I turn my water off and get that in there for its rinse again I'm just going to poke it down in there and so look at how nice and light that someone I think I'm going to like this scour power and that was with here's my wash water with just one washing of my alpaca the wonderful thing I'm finding with the scour power is you don't see a lot of studs here it's it still cleans without all the suds which will make rinsing a whole lot easier all right I'm going to go back and check the pot make sure we're staying at 200 here you can see our first rinse water free mucky Brown water a little bit of suds left in it I place my fiber into its second bath and we'll see how it looked too no I let them sit you know 10 15 20 minutes whatever suits your fancy they need to let it sit for a little bit that's where all the loosening of the dirt and the junk looks like it got a little something something extra in there but that's okay don't worry about it okay my next step after my dye pot has been at 200 degrees for 20 minutes I'm going to add this ammonia sulfite I'm dissolving it in some hot water and then I will put that into my dye pot and what this does is while I add the citric acid it slows down the bonding and gives you a more even dialogue so there everything is dissolved alright my has to solve and again I like I need a little more table room my pot has maintained 200 or just a little under for 20 minutes now I'm going to add this oh look at that gorgeous purple like I'm going again I'm going to put it around the edge of my pot and then throughout I'm going to poke it lightly sorry I'm probably making you dizzy with me moving all around when I get that kind of into the water but I do not want to disorganize my rovings I'm not stirring okay got that into water and now my next step oh there you go now you can see the color without the steam my next step is my jar there we go is to put citric acid in buy this in the grocery store in the canning section or you can also buy it in one to three pound silos rap dialogue through a dying company or online you can also use vinegar this is in one case I don't skimp on Maya citric acid probably only need one tablespoon per pound but I go overboard because I don't want my fiber coming my eye coming out of my fiber and I stir that up and get that to dissolve didn't to make sure I don't have anything stuck on the bottom like we're almost there it design dissolves quite quickly carry this over and I'm going to pour this around the side through the middle poked at it a little bit get it down and around and water and we're doing roving we don't want to disorganize this roving at all you don't want it to felt it's going to be gorgeous Tennessee now need to make sure this stays at 200 for 30 minutes total and you've dropped in temperature a little bit so I'm going to go ahead and fire it up bring it up to 200 and then let it sit overnight which that will give me my 30 minutes of 200 degrees [Applause] [Applause] we're back to our alpaca wash and rinse this is the second rinse and you can see that the water is pretty much clear but I'm still seeing a little bit of this foam so I'm just going to err on the side of caution and if you can see that there's you see the little suds easier here so I'm going to give it one more rinse and then I'll be ready to put it in the dye pot okay here's my pot that I just took off the stove and it is going to sit here overnight it's at 200 degrees and I got to show you this it's gorgeous this is the very crush by Dharma it's very hot but look at that color oh it's going to be so much fun to spin up and what I was checking was to see if the fiber had felt it any during the process and yeah I see at this time it's pulling apart nicely it's going to be fun to spin and blend so I just have to keep my fingers out of the pot I'll get this back in there I'll use a spoon to do that and let it sit until tomorrow morning what it should be nice and cool and ready for rinse okay so here you see my rinse water this is the third rinse and there are no suds on carry these great hairs so now I got it all ready here it is nice and light my sunshine and it's ready to go in the daikon all right here you have a case of panic see this here this is peach on brown and I know I just added it but I am NOT going to be happy with that color since I'm dying roving I do not want to let it dry and try again so I have added berry crush my new favorite and I just added it on top of that color so I've got more dye in this pot then required for the one-pound of fiber but I am going to have a color I am going to love so don't second-guess yourself if you've done something and you say oh I know I'm not going to like it I can tell already then just add another color to it just go wild don't be don't be shy go with a bigger bolder darker color overtop of what you have and you're going to have a lovely color so again my motto is go bold or go home and I need to stop poking that it's the hardest thing for anybody to do and I see my temperatures dropped a little this is a little smaller pot and cover it up and get it up to 200 degrees good morning we've now let our fiber roving sit overnight in our diet bath and I see I still have a lot of color left over in my water so my first rinse is going to be in a vinegar rinse water and this will just help continue setting the dye into the fiber I'm using the same temperature water from what this is now - my rinse water I do not want to shock my roving fiber so this was tricky I was able to work my netting under my roving I see I have a few white alpaca hairs in there which will just disappear when I card this with my blending but my goal was to gently pull it out of the bathwater and it's just a lovely lovely purple very very very looking at berry crush and this time I'm going to use my strainer pot and just gently let it go into this water there we go we're in our first rinse bath and again I'm not agitated it just going to let it sit there I'll let it sit for at least 20 minutes or more well right this is been sitting for several minutes I'd say probably thirty minutes or so I'm looking in the water is pretty clear I'm going to go ahead just and pull it out I'm so excited about this poet I can't wait to see it dry to set that aside and as you can see there is some color in the water again this is a vinegar bath so I will now change the water out to fresh water only and set it back in there for another 30 minutes or so here we have our second rinse after the vinegar rinse this is just plain water and you see it's nice and clear it's been sitting for about 30 minutes I feel confident enough to pull this out and we'll start the drying process since we are working with this very loose robing I'm going to pull it out of the bath or rinse fast let it sit and drain for a while and then we will put it out on window screens to let it dry for those of you curious about how the pink gunstocks turned out here they are our goal was graphite and we got purple but they still look better than pink he seems happy with them so I'm happy with them here we have our final results from dyeing roving and I am just thrilled with the results it's easily pulled apart I'm going to be able to spin it blend it nicely with my alpaca and just so you know when I pulled it out of the last rinse I just placed it on the screen I did not squeeze it wring it out or run it through the washer on spin cycle I don't want to touch this any more than I can if you remember earlier I said I was going to put peach on a white alpaca and then didn't I got confused and put it in my brown Shetland roving and then I over dyed it immediately with the berry burst and you could see it turned out lovely it's a little different shades from the original but it's still lovely and I will enjoy using it and this is MIM and her crazy dying
