this week's column is about New Year's Eve past dresses what to wear on New Year's Eve that is the question I think you kind of probably grow out of having to go out on New Year's Eve at some point when you get to be an adult but to me you never quite grow out of having to dress up on New Year's Eve well I haven't so far at least this year it's all about a 1920s dress tomorrow is 2012 and I think we have got to start looking ahead and next year is going to be all about the flapper dress by this time next year it's going to be a season when the great gatsby is coming out with the Anna DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan and the stills that we've already seen that look amazing and next season's down Abbey is going to be set in the 1920s so obviously you can just imagine Lady Sybil is going killing it on the dance floor what we're looking at basically is a silhouette that's quite drapey nothing to do with the waist which is also quite a good post-christmas factor I think I mean this is kind of semi twenties this one this is from that 1920s boutique collection hard deco but it's a bit more twenties thirties that collection so if you're looking at me going that's not your twenties dress I know but it's kind of nice and it's a bit of a different take on it because it's not very bare here a lot of those dresses do tend to be very cut away at the top they almost all tend to be bare over the arms so you're just going to have to just deal with the whole thing going issues I think there's not really getting around that I don't know what they did about in the 1920s so anyway some other dresses this one like I said is Gucci so a little bit spinny but there are loads of loads of nice ones already on the high street and they will be even more later in the year so let's have a look a few this one is by Bieber which has this lovely kind of almost quite Eiffel Tower shape here in the beading it's got this has got a very defined drop waist here right down here and a kind of simple neckline here no kind of boob definition and that's not not 20s at all and the hemline is that kind of just above the knee which is quite a good hemline really it kind of looks like you're wearing a short dress but you haven't got your thighs out this one here is another beauty I think with this much kind of embellishment it's usually quite nice to stay in a slightly neutral palette because you have this and you had loads of colors going on as well it's a little bit kind of Knickerbocker glory esque so this one here with that kind of peach and silver is just a very nice neutral kind of quite classy color combination I think and this bugle beading here as a breeds life flat in combination with like a sort of sunburst it just gives it a real kind of 1920s look and then lovely soft drop waist this one here is from a label called South this kind neckline is actually a little bit earlier the 1920s that's more sort of 1910s it's quite kind of Lady Mary serious to Downton Abbey rather than the season series three if you want your fashion historical references quite itv1 but again has that real color combination and a really nice low V at the back although be aware of the bra strap and yeah just a really nice simple one I think pretty much anyone could wear and lastly although I know I said about the colors I do think this one's quite pretty and having the color right at the bottom of the dress means that it's not too in-your-face quite literally and I think any of those dresses would be an excellent way to see in the new year
