Please explain how to plant & fertilize your garden : how to fertilize a garden

On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Craig Morrell. I'm with Landscape Restorations in Miami, Florida. We're here at Palm Hammock Orchid Estate and we're talking about planting, and fertilizing. The title of this video is fertilizing plants once they're in the ground. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that as soon as the plant or the trees they want to fertilize it heavily to get it going. They want the biggest tree they can as fast as possible, and that's actually a mistake. One of the best things you can do for a plant is to fertilize it just a little right at the beginning, and slow release fertilizers are definitely the way to go. Neutracoat, Dynamite, Osmacoat, or some of the new planting tablets. One of the great standards are these little Agraform tablets. It says right on the box how many tablets to plant for what size plant. In the case of this yellow shrimp plant, we've already mixed a few tablespoons of dynamite 13-13-13 into the soil. So this plant is set for the next 6 months. All we have to do is stand back and watch the flower show. The idea is don't push the plant right at the beginning. Let it established; let it get used to you. It'll be a much better plant and you'll enjoy your garden that much more.
