hello everyone this is bill with yarn crafts for Lefty's today we're going to be going over how to knit in the round you'll find knitting in the round will come up if you're looking to make a hat from the brim up cuff down socks some sweaters start from the bottom of the sweater and you're knitting in the round for it and also if you're doing call the work sometimes you'll knit your flat piece in the round as well so there's a lot of uses for knitting in the round all I've done here is I've taken a circular needle and I've cast on a whole bunch of stitches now one thing that I cannot encourage you to do enough especially if you are new to working in the round is to set your work down and once you set it down on the table what you want to do is look and see are all my purl bumps which are these parts in here the bottom Ridge of my cast on are they all facing to the inside like over here they're not this has a twist in it so I'm just going to adjust this until everything is on the inside this way what happens is I am making certain that my entire project is going to come together without a twist in it if I left these bumps to the outside and I joined it with the twist in there I wouldn't actually get a round I'd be knitting in a Mobius type shape like this so that's not what we're going for here so give me one second while I set the camera back again so now I've gone ahead I've made sure that everything is nice and neat everybody's facing the way they need to so now I'm making sure that my tail is over to the left in my working yarn is over to the left as well whether you are a continental or an English style knitter it's exactly the same once I know that I have it all right I'm going to carefully pick it all up make sure that my bumps stay to the inside now since I am a continental letter I'm gonna move my working yarn over to my right hand and now all I'm gonna do is I'm gonna knit just like we normally would I'm gonna put the tip in and knit this stitch now notice how there's a big string here so what I'm gonna do is I am going to draw that through nice and tight so that way I don't have a gap and I'm gonna work to leave that tight as long as I can now I'll give my tail a little tug and notice how it's nice and clean so now I just go ahead and I knit all the way around my circle and I will be back to you in just a minute once I finish this round I'm just going to edit this so that way you're not having to watch me knit a hundred and some-odd stitches okay so I have gone ahead and I've knit all the way around and I just have a couple of stitches left and I'm sure as you've gone you've seen that a gap has built up if I just tuck my tail the gap closes up so I don't have to worry about it as much that gap is going to happen as you go for the first couple of rounds so when you get back to it just give the tail a gentle pull to close up the space it's gonna open up again as I finish off these last couple of stitches so I'm just gonna give it a tug I'm gonna go ahead put this one through and now I've reached the end of my round and I'm ready to start it again so I'm gonna give it a tug one more time I'm not death prepping it I'm just giving it a little pull to tighten it up so now I've gone ahead and I've done the first stitch of the next row and you can see that gap really isn't there so now as I go ahead I just start knitting my next round anytime I cross from one round to another I do try to make sure that I am keeping it somewhat tight across the gap so that way I don't have to worry about it spacing up now since I've gotten another row going this is gonna open up a little bit but not as much so when I get back to it I'll just when I make it all the way back around again I'll simply tug the tail a little bit so that way it closes up once you get three or four rounds built up it's not going to open up any more it will stay there will be plenty of stitching to keep it stable so you don't have to worry about it so that's all there is to working in the round nice and easy you won't run into any problems so long as you make sure that when you start it you put it down and you make sure that all your bumps are facing inside I'll generally use a longtail cast on or an old Norwegian Estonian cast on something that gives me some knitting already there so it was clear and easy to see and that way I can assure I don't have a twist it's clean simple and easy and we go from there once you make sure there's no twist and you join it you don't have to worry about it twisting anymore this can wrap around all at once as I get to it and I knit and I move it it's going to straighten back out again so I don't ever have to worry about knitting it twisted I hope you found this episode of young crafts for lefties on how to knit in the round helpful this is bill happy knitting
